How to Rear Cross Your Agility Dog

There are just two steps to performing a great rear cross with your agility dog.

Step #1: Set the dog’s line. The rear cross starts with you standing close to the wing of jump #1. Ideally, you should be able to reach out your hand and touch the wing. If you can’t touch it, you’re too far away. On some sequences, you won’t be able to get very close to this first wing, but try and get as close as you can. For every rear cross you do, your goal should be to run to this wing and squarely face the next obstacle, which you are going to rear cross. You then cue your dog to move forward and proceed to Step #2.

Step #2: Run the diagonal path. Draw an imaginary line between the wings of the two jumps, as shown below. Now run on that imaginary line really fast. We give a great reason for running a diagonal path in this article Comparison of Handler Paths on Rear Crosses.
