The Oscars
Remember “Barbenheimer”? The Barbie and Oppenheimer phenomenon swept through Hollywood and pop culture and culminated in a grand celebration at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night. Oppenheimer emerged as the night’s big winner, clinching the Best Picture award and taking home a total of seven Oscars. Christopher Nolan received the Best Director nod, Cillian Murphy won Best Actor, and Robert Downey Jr. was honored with Best Supporting Actor (we love RDJ in his other roles as Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes).
In a surprise to many, Emma Stone secured the Best Actress award for her role in Poor Things, outshining the anticipated frontrunner, Lily Gladstone, from Killers of the Flower Moon. Poor Things also claimed victories in three crafts categories: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. I haven’t seen it yet because the trailer looked strange to me, but I’d like to check it out.
One of the most talked-about moments of the night was Ryan Gosling’s live performance of “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie movie. Like the audience in attendance and viewers worldwide, Sarah and I were highly entertained by Gosling’s charm and talent. He was joined by many Kens, including Marvel franchise stars Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir, making the performance highly memorable. Ben-Adir is garnering his own accolades for his portrayal of Bob Marley in the movie Bob Marley: One Love. During the song, Gosling broke pink boards and sang with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. It’s no wonder that “I’m Just Ken” has become an anthem in many households, including mine, where my kids can belt out every word. Enjoy the performance below:

US Women’s Soccer
Also on Sunday night, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) rebounded from their recent World Cup disappointment by defeating Brazil in the gold medal game at the CONCACAF tournament. The team’s solid defense against Brazil and team captain Lindsey Horan’s winning header put the world on notice that the U.S. will be strong contenders in the upcoming Olympics. I think that the team’s resilience will be familiar to many of you dog agility competitors out there, who also know the value of bouncing back from setbacks.
The U.S. played a physical quarterfinal game against Colombia and then battled Canada, winning in a shootout on penalty kicks after the game finished in a tie, with some fantastic saves by the American goalie. You can start the video below at the 10:27 mark to see the exciting shootout vs Canada! Our daughter Hannah plays goalie in water polo, and this past weekend at a big tournament, she won the third place game for her team by first preserving the tie in regulation with a great save and then holding the other team to just one goal in five attempts in the shootout.
